JAL applies to reduce cargo fuel surcharge for April
Japan Airlines (JAL) has applied to the Japanese Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism (MLIT) to revise down, from the 1st April 2010, its international cargo fuel surcharge for flights departing from Japan only.
Since the 1st April 2009, JAL started adjusting its cargo fuel surcharge levels on a monthly basis by using the one-month average fuel price of Singapore kerosene of the month before last. As the average fuel price of Singapore kerosene for the month of February in 2010 was US$82.37 per barrel, the benchmark fuel price used for calculation of the fuel surcharge level in April will be within the range of US$80.00 to US$84.99 per barrel (refer to table below).
The international cargo fuel surcharge will therefore decrease on long-haul international routes from 80 yen per kg to 73 yen, on medium-haul international routes from 69 yen per kg to 63 yen, and on short-haul routes from 58 yen per kg to 53 yen accordingly.

Air cargo growth for Cargoitalia - schedule increases 50%
Cargoitalia, Italy’s all-cargo carrier, is increasing its schedule by 50% this month.
USA flights will rise to three per week, operating Milan (Malpensa) – New York – Chicago on Wednesdays, Milan – Chicago on Saturdays, and Milan – New York on Sundays.
Flights to Hong Kong will also increase to three-times-weekly. Tuesday services will route via a new destination, Sharjah, while Thursday and Saturday services will continue to transit Dubai. All inbound flights will maintain their technical stop in Almaty.
Commercial Director Roberto Gilardoni said “The increase in US services is in direct response to demand. The market was understandably cautious about our operation following the termination of Italian freighter operations in 2008. But we have proven that we are a totally new airline, we have demonstrated our reliability and commitment, and the market has responded with strong support. We are now the only carrier providing direct maindeck capacity from New York to Milan.”
“We have also had very positive feedback on our Hong Kong services. The extra flight via Sharjah ties in well with our US-Italy services, providing the US market with efficient transfers to Iraq and Afghanistan.”
“Provision of a high-quality service is fundamental to our business model. Our plan was always to progressively step up our operations, in order to ensure that our equipment, staff and systems were fully bedded-in without the pressure of high utilisation. This policy has worked very well.”
“We are improving our on-time performance every month, and our results to date prove that we are now fully ready to move up a gear – which will enable us to provide a wider range of services to our customers, and to achieve much higher revenues without increasing overheads.”
Cargoitalia will take delivery of its next aircraft (a third MD-11SF) in June 2010, with further fleet expansion already planned up to 2014.
Emirates SkyCargo takes gold in Air Cargo Excellence survey
Emirates airline has added yet another honour to its roster by taking home a Gold Award at the Annual Air Cargo Excellence Awards at a recent ceremony at the Iata World Cargo Symposium in Vancouver, Canada, further reinforcing its position as a leader in the global aviation industry. Airline winners were elected by a survey determined by freight forwarders around the globe, who rated airlines on customer service, performance, value and information technology.
Air Cargo World, the global news authority on air logistics and freight transport, unveiled the findings of its 6th annual Air Cargo Excellence (ACE) Survey; measuring carriers and airports on specific criteria and ranked them to identify industry performance levels. Other carrier winners included: Southwest Airlines, FedEx Express, Virgin Atlantic and Nippon Cargo Airlines.
Upon receiving the news of the award, Ram Menen, Emirates’ Divisional Senior Vice President Cargo, said he was simply “delighted and very honoured that Emirates was considered for such an exquisite award”.
“The results of the ACE Survey are important to cargo airlines because it is our customers who rate our performance. We strive for excellence in all areas of our business and are thrilled that our customers rate us so highly.”
“The Air Cargo Excellence Awards ceremony gave us a great opportunity to honour the airlines and airports that strive to meet excellence and to exceed their past performances. The ACE Survey has become an important benchmark of airline and airport performance,” said Steve Prince, publisher of Air Cargo World.
In 2010 Emirates SkyCargo has also been awarded “International Cargo Airline of the Year” at Air Cargo India in Mumbai and the “Gold” award in ATW AdAward’s Cargo Services category in Singapore.
