Mercedes Benz ML 63 AMG gets a new look
A best-seller unveils its updated exterior: the ML 63 AMG, featuring a powerful 375 kW (510 hp) AMG 6.3-litre V8 engine, takes on a more attractive appearance thanks to some subtle but effective changes.
From the front, the eye is immediately drawn to the new bonnet with power domes, and the darkened bi-xenon headlamps with active light function. The rear, meanwhile, also contributes appropriately to the new look: the performance SUV now features darkened tail lamps incorporating a clear-lens design and LED technology. The subtle changes to the exterior coordinate perfectly with the high-gloss, chromed front and rear underguard, and afford the ML 63 AMG an even more powerful and distinctive appearance.
Powerful and torque-laden AMG 6.3-litre V8 engine
Still boasting a power output of 375 kW (510 hp) at 6800/rpm as well as 630 Nm of torque, the ML 63 AMG is capable of accelerating from 0 to 100 km/h in 5.0 seconds, and achieves a top speed of 250 km/h (electronically limited). At the renowned International Engine of the Year Awards in 2009, the AMG 6.3-litre V8 engine took the top places in both the “Best Performance Engine” and “Above 4 litres” categories.
As before, power transfer is taken care of via the AMG SPEEDSHIFT 7G-TRONIC automatic transmission with three drive modes. The permanent all-wheel drive is decidedly sporty: the power is split asymmetrically 40:60 between the front and rear wheels to provide optimum agility. The AMG sports suspension, based on the AIRMATIC package with air suspension, adaptive damping system ADS and automatic level control all-round, provides dynamic performance combined with the hallmark Mercedes long-distance comfort. The generously dimensioned AMG high-performance braking system, which features internally ventilated and perforated brake discs all-round, ensures short braking distances and optimum resistance to fading.
The ML 63 AMG comes with 5-spoke AMG light-alloy wheels, which are painted titanium grey with a high-sheen finish and fitted with 295/40 R 20 tyres on the front and rear. As an optional extra, titanium-grey-painted, high-sheen twin-spoke AMG light-alloy wheels fitted with 295/35 R 21 tyres are also available.
High-quality interior with nappa leather upholstery
As usual, the interior of the ML 63 AMG is both functional and high-quality: electrically adjustable AMG sports seats finished in nappa leather upholstery, with Alcantara inserts in the shoulder areas and multicontour function and heating, are complemented by the AMG sports steering wheel with AMG aluminium shift paddles and perforated leather on the specially-shaped grip area. A nappa leather-trimmed dashboard is also available as an optional extra.
The updated ML 63 AMG is available to order with immediate effect and will be delivered to customers from July 2010.
Mercedes SLS AMG and E 63 AMG now at the AMG Driving Academy
At selected events of the AMG Driving Academy, participants can experience two new Mercedes dream cars – the SLS AMG and the E 63 AMG. The programme of events of the AMG Driving Academy, which was founded in 2007, is divided into five different skill levels: EMOTION, BASIC, ADVANCED, PRO and MASTERS.
The choice extends from lifestyle-oriented and also race training events at which participants take their first steps towards physical driving limits, right up to intensive race track training of a competitive nature. The various levels of difficulty are all tailor-made to the individual driving aspirations of the participants. The team of experienced AMG Driving Academy instructors includes the likes of former DTM, ITC and FIA-GT champion Bernd Schneider, as well as Bernd Mayländer, the driver of the Official F1™ Safety Car.
During the events of the AMG Driving Academy, drivers and enthusiasts of AMG vehicles gradually learn to assess and master the physical limits of driving in complete safety, at legendary race tracks such as the North Loop of the Nürburgring or the Grand Prix circuit at Spa-Francorchamps in Belgium. In this way each of the participants automatically improves their active driving safety.
Experienced motorsport drivers and licensed instructors impart their extensive knowledge in a professional manner. One special event is the AMG Winter Sporting in Arjeplog (Sweden), close to the Arctic Circle: the AMG high-performance vehicles provided are driven exclusively on expanses of ice. All of the vehicles are equipped with special, spiked tyres that ensure a precisely defined level of grip. Prices for the AMG Driving Academy programmes start from just 290 euros.
In addition to the varied event programme which takes place on European race tracks, the AMG Driving Academy is also able to provide Amercian sports car fans with some tailor-made race track training, for example at the Laguna Seca Raceway in California.

Matt exterior finish with new Mercedes-Benz SL350 Night Edition
Motorists looking for a vehicle that goes to a new level in terms of its exterior finish may wish to consider the Mercedes-Benz SL350 Night Edition, one reviewer has suggested.
Writing for Auto Express, Jack Rix notes that the popular roadster is available in optional Magno matt black paintwork, which utilises a silky matt clearcoat applied as the final layer of exterior paintwork.
This has to be developed individually for each model and colour, but produces scintillating results that are well worth the time and effort needed in the process, according to Mr Rix.
He also comments positively on some of the other night-inspired features of the Mercedes-Benz model, including dark headlamp surrounds, tinted tail lamps and specially-designed leather seats featuring silver arrow-shaped badging.
Mr Rix adds: “Aluminium trim on the centre console and door panels lifts the ambience tastefully, while Mercedes-Benz’ Airscarf system with silver fans visible through the back of the headrest means there’s no excuse for not dropping the metal folding roof.”
The SL Night Edition is also available in a SL500 guise, which can complete the sprint from still to 62 miles per hour in 5.4 seconds, blending raw power with exceptional performance.
