Southwest Airlines offers passengers a 'Corona Moment'
Beginning today, Southwest Airlines will add a new beer offering onboard. Nothing says summer like a cold Corona Extra with a lime! Corona Extra is the #1 selling imported beer in the U.S. Corona’s smooth taste offers the perfect balance between heavier European imports and lighter domestic beer. The additional beverage option is another way Southwest is improving the Customer experience onboard.
Corona Extra will be the same price as Southwest’s current beer offerings at $5 per can or one Southwest drink coupon. Corona joins the airline’s other onboard beer offerings of Bud Light, Miller Lite, Michelob Ultra, and Heineken.
Southwest will be testing Corona Extra onboard through September and at that time, based on Customer demand, the airline will determine whether to keep the offering onboard.

The contest will encourage Customers to submit a photo, using the hashtag #mycorona, of their own Corona moment–a moment of pure bliss and relaxation with a Corona Extra in hand. The best photo submission will win two roundtrip tickets on Southwest and a three-night stay at a Sterling Resort in Panama City Beach, Southwest’s newest destination, opening May 23. “We are thrilled to honor Florida with this beautiful aircraft; it is truly a demonstration of our dedication to Florida and a tribute to our more than 2,500 hard-working Florida Employees,” said Southwest Airlines Chairman, President, and CEO Gary Kelly. “Our pride for Florida will fly high over the 68 cities Southwest serves.”
Since beginning service to Florida in January of 1996, Southwest Airlines has grown from 17 daily nonstop departures to 284 daily nonstop departures. Southwest now carries 20 percent of all air traffic to the state of Florida. Southwest Airlines will begin service to its seventh Florida city, Panama City Beach, on 23rd May, 2010.
More than 200 Southwest Airlines Employees and community leaders celebrated the unveiling today at Tampa Airport. Following the unveiling event in Tampa, the aircraft began a tour of the airline’s Florida cities. At each stop, the airline will host a celebratory event in the Southwest gate area to display the aircraft to Employees and Customers.
“Florida is proud to have such a strong Southwest Airlines presence in Florida,” said Governor Charlie Crist. “Not only is Southwest employing thousands of talented Floridians, but is also making Florida more easily accessible and affordable for visitors. I am grateful for their continued commitment to Florida.”
Southwest Airlines Cargo honored as Airline of the Year
Southwest Airlines Cargo has been recognised for its excellence in air cargo for the sixth straight year, being named “Airline of the Year” by the Express Delivery & Logistics Association (XLA).
Southwest Airlines has placed on XLA’s Airline of the Year list for nine consecutive years. In addition, Southwest Airlines Cargo won XLA’s award for Excellence in Web Site and Technology. The award follows Southwest Cargo’s redesign of its website. In November 2008, Southwest Cargo launched a new and improved site, swacargo.com, which offers easy, one-click navigation and real-time flight status, along with shipment tracking.
To top it off, Southwest Airlines Cargo also was named Carrier of the Year by the Airforwarders Association. AFA members voted on the Airforwarders Association member carrier with the best ontime performance, Customer Service, problem resolution, claims handling, technology support, service options, and overall value. Southwest was chosen in each category as the clear winner among association members.
“Our amazing people have done it again! We’re honored to accept these awards earned by the dedicated Cargo, Operations, and Ramp Employees across our system,” said Matt Buckley, Senior Director of Southwest Airlines Cargo. “Southwest Cargo Customers count on our Employees to consistently deliver reliable, ontime, and friendly service. We are determined to win the hearts of our Customers as we strive for continuous improvement in our overall experience and value.”
The XLA Awards are based on an annual survey of association members who use the services of commercial passenger airlines for their express deliveries around the world. Southwest took top honors in 2002, 2003, and 2005 through 2009, and finished second in the rankings in 2001 and 2004.
Founded in 1976, XLA is a nonprofit association whose members include large firms with global delivery networks and smaller businesses with strong regional delivery networks. The association represents the interest of the air courier and express delivery industry by communicating positions to legislative and regulatory officials. In addition, they provide a forum for the exchange of information regarding trends and developments within the industry, and they promote the use of air courier and express services.
The Airforwarders Association is an alliance of Indirect Air Carriers, Cargo Airlines, and affiliated businesses located throughout the global transportation community.
